IHS Math team has the most successful year yet

By INDIA KRUG – The IHS Math Team is composed of intelligent and driven individuals who are celebrating their most successful year since the creation of the group.  Dr. Scott Layden, a teacher from the IHS mathematics department, has advised the club for ten years.

Junior Oliver Xing said, “I joined the math team to further challenge myself and to use my math skills to bring honor to our school. Throughout the past several years, I had a lot of fun being part of the math team and as a team, we successfully brought trophies to IHS and I cannot be more proud of the whole team.”

During the 2018-19 school year, the math team has participated and excelled at three competitions.  The earliest was on November 8, 2018 at Clarion University, and Indiana took first place out of 26 schools. Junior George Zhang finished in third place overall, junior Oliver Xing in second, and Junior Chloe Williams in first.

They also attended a tournament at Pitt Greensburg on March 28, 2019.  Senior Andre Wasem took third place overall and Junior Chloe Williams took first place.

Junior Maggie Conjelko shared, “The competitions have really allowed me to improve my math skills in a challenging but fun way. I get to see college campuses and hang out with my friends.”

The last competition of the year took place at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and included 28 schools. IHS placed first with 117.25 points, Sewickley Academy coming in just behind with 114.75 points.114.75 points). Out of the 232 students, Senior Andre Wasem was third overall and Junior Chloe Williams was second overall.

This is the first year that the math team has finished in first place at all three competitions.  They are looking forward to continuing their winning streak next year.

Senior Andre Wasem commented, “We had an amazing team this year, I’m proud of everyone and it feels nice to finally sweep every competition, something our talented team hasn’t ever done.”
