Science Club is back at it again!

By CHRISTIAN BROWN

Science club is a club that promotes not only science but scientific inquiry.  The club makes projects that test what members want to learn about a topic, and then get to design and test experiments they’ve created.

Not only that, students in Science Club can compete in various competitions, presenting the experiment and the results they gathered from the experiments.  Students can compete in different levels of competitions from local all the way up to state and national levels.

Some of the competitions that Science Club members have the opportunity to participate in are the PJAS, PRSEF, and the IUP Fair.  Members get to compete against students all over Pennsylvania for scholarships and other prizes.

Senior Sanderson Lin commented, “Science Club is a community where your curiosity thrives; here you can answer your unanswered questions through your own hand.”

Students can meet both A and B Clubs but are only required to be in one of them. During the club, students will work on brainstorming and designing their experiments with the help of the students around them, as well as the club administrators.

Science Club focuses on members need to be successful.  Club administrators assist the students in their projects but still lets the student take full control over their experiments.

Senior Gabe Kenning stated, “It’s really fun, and some of my favorite memories from IHS are from Science Club competitions.  My favorite part about Science Club would be going to PJAS states at Penn State.  We went on a field trip for two nights, living on campus, presenting our findings, having a lot of fun, and making great memories.”

Gabe is currently working on creating ocean-powered electricity generators.  Since the ocean is constantly moving, it could provide a constant source of energy.  Gabe plans to engineer an apparatus, like a generator, to turn the movement of energy in the ocean into electrical energy in order to have a clean, constant, and renewable source.
