Indiana Area Senior High School

By SYDNEY BRICE – The girl’s basketball team was coming back after an extremely successful season, but have now been shut down twice this season.

COVID-19, new coaches, and a new section are all things this team is working against this year, but they are ready to put in the work. The team is moving up to the 5A section which leads to competing against extreme competition, but they have done the best they can to get ready for it.

Junior Hope Cook explained, ““During the shutdown there wasn’t much we could do since we didn’t have any access to a gym. But our coaches sent out a workout that we did daily. Some of the players got together on our own and worked out. But it was super-difficult and really set us behind since a lot of other teams that we play were allowed to practice.”

This season isn’t what most thought winter sports would look like and sadly this is the way the seniors are ending their high school careers. Senior Caroline Bianco stated, “I’m definitely going to miss my teammates the most. I have known and played with a lot of the girls for many years so it’s hard to believe that this is my last year. This isn’t what I pictured my senior year of basketball to look like, but the only thing we can do is try to make the most of it.”

Last year, the girls made it deep into WPIAL playoffs and were hoping to regain their spot on the bracket. They are also hoping to get a chance to play deeper in the State Playoffs.

The girls remain determined. Bianco asserted, “Even though we’re in a tougher section this year, I think that both Varsity and JV will win most of their games. Our goal this year is to make it back to the playoffs and try to win the section.”

Girl’s basketball is a team above anything else. Adri Petroff, a sophomore, said, “ I feel like our team is definitely closer than most teams because we all have been playing with each other from what seems like elementary school, that being said, we love it when new players join. This team is like a big family to me and they are always there for me when I need them”

Many things are changing due to COVID-19 and winter sports are temporarily shut down, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the girl’s motivation to be the best team they possibly can.
