By HANNAH STEELE- On November 15, the girl’s basketball season began. With an 8-4 overall record and 3-2 section record, the team is set to have a very successful season.
“Our expectations are the same every year, make the playoffs and get to the state playoffs,” expressed coach Otto Peterson. “The highlight of the season so far would be winning two games at the Latrobe tournament. That’s when things started clicking with the team.” Peterson has been coaching the girls for 24 years, along with coach Dave Woodall.
“We’re currently riding a six-game winning streak and playing well especially defensively,” stated coach Woodall. “We were able to win both of our games at the Latrobe Holiday Tournament and that really boosted our confidence. We’re excited for the remainder of the season!”
The team includes 20 girls, with seniors Hannah Scardina, Molly Kodman, Alexis Bonatch, Laken Dills, and Lexi Smathers acting as team captains.
Senior captain Alexis Bonatch expressed, “We’ve been working great as a team, our defense is starting to come together and it’s paying off. We have a nice winning streak and hopefully, we can continue to keep it.”
In order to make the playoffs, the team must finish in one of the top four spots of the section.
“We had a little bit of a slow start, but now we’re playing the best we ever have been,” stated senior captain Lexi Smathers. “Our record keeps getting better and it’s been a really fun season for all of us so far. Big things are going to continue happening in the next month.”
“Our season has been going great so far,” said senior captain Laken Dills. “We have a stacked team with a lot of potential for this season as well as years to come. We are hoping that our hard work will continue to pay off and we can make it to playoffs.”
“This is a pretty special team that is getting better every game,” concluded Peterson.
