By INDIA KRUG – Senior season has officially started for the Class of 2020 with the annual Senior Class Picnic. Organized by a committee of Class Representatives and overseen by Mrs. Sexton, it was a night for the books. Teachers donated their time to be referees, and to cook and serve food. The event included dinner and kickball tournament, in which Eisenhower Elementary took the trophy.
Senior Alyssa McLaine, who was a team captain for East Pike said, “The senior picnic was an amazing experience. It was great to come together as a senior class and just play kickball, eat food, and have a good time. Reliving my elementary school days was a blast, especially knowing that we’ll all be graduating soon.”
Students gathered at the upper commons in their elementary school’s color for walking tacos and conversation. Teammates painted each other’s faces and went over the rosters in anticipation of the big game. After the rules were read, including the standard playground “no shots above the waist” law, the teams could be seen bounding down to the field.
Senior Taylor Lang commented, “The class picnic was heartwarming. It brought all the elementary schools back together and gave a feeling of unity. Since going into the junior and senior high we are friends with people from different schools, but it was so nice to hang out with everyone. Even if we didn’t talk much before that night, it felt like we were all one big family again.”
The tournament itself was a celebration of the Alma Maters that seniors attended and the childhoods they shared. It left many feeling nostalgic and others looking to the future. Teammates cheered one another on as they kicked and ran. Smiles stayed on faces, even after it began to rain.
Senior Zach Palko states, “It’s weird to be doing all the things my siblings and friends did when they were seniors. I’ve been anticipating these activities, but it doesn’t even feel like I’m a senior. It was nice to rekindle some old friendships with a friendly competition.”
The first senior activity of the year was a success and just a first in a list of milestones that twelfth graders will experience in the coming months.
