The Last of Us starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey has taken the world by storm with the two’s amazing acting and chilling new take on the zombie apocalypse genre. The show is based off of the video game The Last Of Us which launched in 2013, and so far the fans are impressed.
I will be discussing my personal opinion on the show along with others I have gathered from the students of IHS. I have not played the video game yet, but from what has been said there are some key differences that have been pointed out.
To begin, the storyline revolves around a man named Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, who lost his daughter during the initial outbreak twenty years ago from the present plot. Junior Victoria Gallagher discusses how Joel is her favorite character, “Joel has to be my favorite because he is so tough but at the same time relatable.
Joel’s character development begins when he meets the other star, Ellie Williams, played by Bella Ramsey. Ellie Williams is immune to the disease, and is believed to be the answer to the world’s problems. The two are set off on a journey together to bring Ellie to a base belonging to a rebellion, otherwise known as the fireflies.
While the pair are on their journey, they face terrible loss, fight intense battles, and form a bond that inevitably heals each other.
Junior Cassie Michele comments on her love for both the show and game, “I like both so much, what I appreciate more about the show in particular is how they showed more depth in characters the game barely touched on.”
One of the biggest changes I heard about was during my favorite episode, “When We are in Need.” Though this episode is extremely disturbing and contains very dark themes, Bella Ramsey’s performance is phenomenal. During this episode Ellie is captured by a very twisted group of people led by a man named David. In the game, when Ellie escapes she kills David but during the process is stopped by Joel, this does not happen in the show. In the show, Ellie kills David and only after she fully escapes meets up with Joel again. Most of the fans were in favor of this change, and some even liked it better.
In the end, through all the violence and suspense, the show is about love. Throughout the series there are various love stories that are shown throughout the apocalypse, which makes it all so much more impactful.
Senior Caroline Porter discusses how the actors’ performances enhance this, “The acting in that show was incredible, and all the little details I’m noticing as I’m re-watching is something else.”
So whether you were a fan of the game or not, go check out The Last of Us. It’s an amazing and thrilling story, shown in such a beautiful and well done way that meant so much to so many people.
