Winter track is back at IHS

By SYDNEY ANDERSON

Winter track is back at IHS for the season with meets and practices weekly. Although all meets are away, you can wish the runners good luck before they go. So far in the season, new records have been set and our team has faced tough teams and won. Members of the team can look forward to a successful season.

Practices for the team take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Runner practices contain a variety of conditioning to work on speed and skill. There are also sessions in the gym to help with breath control and building strength. Along with the runners, throwing practices also take place. Throwers practice their throws and work on strengthening themselves to help prepare for the competition. Jumpers also have practices, working on stamina to get the best distance in their jumps. Coaches are Mrs. Kinter for the runners and Mr. Cochran.

Track meets are large events that consist of multiple teams at an indoor complex. Since there is no indoor track in Indiana, home meets cannot be held. Nearly all of the meets are held at Edinboro University with one at Penn State University.

Although the team doesn’t have official captains, many of the upperclassmen step up and take on the leadership role.

So far in the season, multiple school records have been broken. Abbie Huey, senior and track veteran, has broken the 200 meter, 60 meter, and 400 meter. Freshman Addie Fry broke her first record at the high school in the 800 meter. The 4×200 meter relay with team members Abbie Huey, Eve Kuzneski, Hannah Cowburn, and Addie Fry. The 4×400 meter relay also broke the record, with runners Addie Fry, Eve Kuzneski, Kate Mill, and Abbie Huey.

“I feel amazing about breaking that record. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get it, but now that I know how to run it I just want to keep getting better,” Fry tells us after her record breaking run.

The goal for the team is to make it states at the end of the season. Will Berzonsky, senior track runner, tells us, “For the team, we want to get as many people to states as possible. We have a good shot at getting a girls and boys relay there.”

Winter track is a cold sport and the team has been working hard all season to represent IHS. Support your team by wishing them luck before meets. Hopefully our track team can continue to have success and make it to states.
