As the fall sports season wrapped up, IHS athletes began to look toward the winter sports season.
The winter sports teams have always had success at IHS and it looks like this year will be no different. The returning athletes have set their goals high for the 2022-23 season.
The major sports for this season are Wrestling, Basketball, Winter Track, Swimming, Hockey, Dance Team, and Rifle Team.
When asked about wrestling, Sophomore Carter Putt told the High Arrow the following: “I think that we got some guys on the team this year that can do some real damage in the postseason. Guys like the Fanella’s, Will Turner, Tuscan Blystone, Alvin Liu, and myself are looking to produce results for our team and hopefully win the section as a team and go to states as individuals.” The wrestling team will have its first competition on December 7th.
Winter Track athletes are coming off of a very successful spring season last year. Both boys and girls managed to break school records last year, and they plan on doing the same thing again this year.
Senior Jon Berzonsky had this to say about the upcoming season: “Our goals are high this year. We want to be tri-state champions and medal at the state meet.” This is an ambitious goal. The last time a boy’s team won a Tri-State title was in 2019. On the girl’s side, senior Abbie Huey had this to say about the girl’s team this year, “ For this winter season, our girl’s team is working on building the base for a successful spring season and really creating a team bond. We are a fairly young team, with myself being the exception. We are hoping to have a strong 4×4.”
IHS basketball will also start its season this winter, and according to sophomore Stanford Webb, this season will be one to remember. “We’re young but we’ve been working hard throughout the summer. And we’re looking forward to seeing the fruits of our labor” The boys had their first games already and won against Marion Center and Yough. The girl’s team also played and lost to Norwin.
With the stage set for successful winter sports teams, this season should be one that IHS will remember.
