Teachers in training: IHS launches new Rising Educators Program

By Bella Flores

There are many things that make IHS an amazing place to be, but the biggest reason is our teachers. ICTC recently partnered with IHS to start up the new Rising Educators program. This is a program that is based at IHS that provides students a head start at an education to become teachers. This program is open to all schools that qualify for the ICTC program.

The program is run by IHS Family and Consumer Sciences teachers Mrs. Sarah Juart and Mrs. Marianne Brady. Similarly to how students attend ICTC, students participating in the program attend IHS for half of their academic day.

The Rising Educators Program is an extension of the IHS child development class. In this program, students learn about child development, the process of becoming a teacher, and even get hands-on experience teaching as they run a preschool that is based in IHS. The preschool has a morning and an afternoon session. During junior and senior year, students have the opportunity to compete co-op placements in addition to working with the IHS preschool program.

The IHS preschool lab recently got a makeover. Over the summer, the construction crew worked tirelessly to create a brand new space just for the preschool. Joanna Howard, a junior Rising Educators student from Homer Center, commented, “The new room is great. It’s amazing to see a space just for the preschoolers.”

This new program is an amazing addition to the current programs that ICTC offers. Rising Educators teacher, Mrs. Sarah Juart, thinks this program is beneficial to students because “they get lots of experience of what it’s like to be a teacher. They are getting a first-hand look at teaching.”

Isabel Rowland, another junior from Homer Center, joined the program because “Teaching is something I’ve always wanted to do. When I heard about this program, I was so excited.”

This is an amazing new program that is designed to set students up for success beyond the high school setting. We here at IHS cannot wait to see what these teachers-in-training do next.
