Raising money, awareness, and school spirit: IHS Leadership Seminar 2024

By Gabi Isenberg

IHS Leadership is back this year, planning influential events for the community and IHS students alike. MiniTHON, a teacher luncheon, and fun tenth period activities are just a sample of the efforts Leadership has made to bring a variety of opportunities to the IHS community.

Leadership Seminar is a group formed by members of the senior class, all of whom hold leadership positions in organizations and clubs throughout the school. The 2024-2025 seminar class is composed of 27 students from the graduating class of 2025. The organization supplies students with beneficial opportunities. Senior and Leadership member Tim Birch expresses, “Leadership is a great environment that builds my leadership skills and will allow me to connect and collaborate with other leaders…[it] also helps generate ideas, as there are many other leaders working together.” These ideas are useful when forming committees to focus on particular events that Leadership plans – one of the most popular being MiniTHON.

MiniTHON, organized and held by IHS Leadership, is a branch of Penn State’s THON – a 46-hour event to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. Throughout the school year, Leadership Seminar holds events to raise money for MiniTHON, which is a 6-hour-long night of games, music, and dancing at IHS. MiniTHON is held in March, meaning that Leadership students work hard to raise funds to donate to childhood cancer in six short months. Several members of Leadership are also members of Cancer Kids First: a youth-led, nonprofit, non-school affiliated organization dedicated to raising awareness for children with cancer. Their involvement with MiniTHON provides numerous opportunities to engage with CKF.

Numerous other activities are coordinated by Leadership Seminar to raise money for MiniTHON. Leadership member Vania Ali shares that the organization has “a Halloween festival, monthly 10th period tournaments, [and] a bunch of fun events planned as a surprise as we get closer to MiniTHON”. The committees within the group organize the activities for IHS students to participate in throughout the school year.

With the retirement of Ms. Devon Duffy, former Leadership advisor, the organization is now advised by English teacher Mrs. Beth Sabatini and Special Education teacher Mrs. Kristy Manning.

IHS Leadership Seminar is working to provide students with fun-filled opportunities that also advocate and raise funds for a crucial cause. In their last year of high school, the leadership qualities this incredible group of students develops and strengthens will be sure to follow each of them into their future careers.
