IHS varsity volleyball: set for success

By Gabrielle Isenberg

IHS Girls’ Volleyball is back in season for the 2023-2024 school year. The varsity team is 5-4 so far this year, and this season will prove to be tough with the opponents they’re facing.

This year, the IHS volleyball team is led by their coaches Allison Ball and Jamie Edmonds, and their captain, senior Alex Ball. There are four seniors total on the volleyball team. One of those seniors, Taylor Wood, spoke on the responsibility of being a senior. “I do feel that there is a different responsibility now that I am a senior because I have to step up my playing. I have to do better for my team and also myself…I also need to set a good example for the younger players and help them through what they still need to learn,” stated Taylor Wood.

The majority of the varsity team members were seniors last year, so the team has had to reconstruct themselves. Junior Stella Stossel spoke on the effects of this. “We lost a lot of seniors last year, so coming together this year as a younger team was definitely a challenge. We had to grow together, bond together, and trust together throughout the whole summer. It definitely challenged us more against our opponents. Playing against those teams that are already well-bonded was definitely difficult at first, but we’ve improved,” she mentioned.

Volleyball is one of the more popular sports among women and girls. Indiana offers an excellent volleyball program that helps set up students for success if they wish to play on a more competitive travel team. Part of this program was summer strength training at Alexander Strength Development. The volleyball team had training sessions a few days a week over the summer to help prepare them for the season. “It helped us build our strength for the season to prevent injury and build our endurance so that we can play our best this season,” stated sophomore Paige Fisanich.

The IHS varsity volleyball team has put in an immense amount of hard work and dedication to make this season their best. While the regular season ends in October, students can still cheer on the team. Check the IASD athletics website for their schedule to see these girls in action.
