IHS hockey team is sticking it to their competition

By ADRIANA GUTH-BOROWSKI –  As winter sports begin, the IHS Hockey Team breaks the ice. With their first win against Greensburg Catholic, the team is launching what looks like another good season.

The roster for the team includes three seniors, Tyler Barker and Clark Josephson, who play offense, and defender Alex Guth-Borowski. Tyler Barker, who is excited about the season states, “We have a good team this year, and if we work together, we should have a good season. It feels good to be a senior, but I’m going to miss the team.”

Others on the team are going to be sad to see the seniors go. Freshman Orlando Clark expressed, “It’s going to be emotional to see the seniors go because I have gotten to know them, and they are people I look up to.”

The team’s makeup includes two female players. Junior Madison Barker has been on the high school team for two years as the team’s goalie. Madison stated, “Being a girl on the team isn’t that big a deal, I grew up playing with a lot of the people on the team.”

Junior Alison Arotin joined the IHS hockey team this season. She said, “It’s definitely different being one of the only girls, but I like it a lot. They treat me like I’m one of them. I like playing with the guys because it helps me get faster and stronger to take my game to the next level.”

With practices on Monday’s after school, Wednesday morning practices, and Thursday games, the team definitely keeps busy. Many on the team are not fans of the before school practices. Senior Alex Guth-Borowski said, “Getting up for the early practice is always hard, but being on the ice is a good way to start the day.”

To support the team, many students cheer on the team in the student section. This group of “Rowdy Rooters” have different dress-up themes at all of the home games and use creative cheers to encourage the hockey players.

Junior Katie Conrad states, “I’ve always liked being in the student sections because my friends have always played hockey, so I like to watch them play. Also, it’s just so fun to be there with everyone.”

The team has a positive attitude going into the beginning of the season and believes that this year will be yet another successful and memorable season.
