Athena Club reboots at IHS

By Gabi Isenberg

After being taken off the club list this year, Athena Club is being revived at IHS. New English 10 teacher, Mrs. Deanne Magolis has dedicated time and effort to restarting the women’s leadership organization for the school, which will meet once a month on Wednesdays during tenth period.

Previously advised by Mrs. Juart, Athena Club is a community service organization based largely around women. IHS’s Athena Club is a branch of Athena International, a larger group of members who live by the eight principles of ‘enlightened leadership’: live authentically, learn constantly, build relationships, foster collaboration, act courageously, advocate fiercely, give back, and celebrate. Mrs. Magolis, a new addition to the IHS faculty, is advising the club this year. At Lincoln Memorial University, she was a member of the university’s Athena International organization. She expresses, “My goal is to lead lessons for our members on the Eight Principles of Enlightened Leadership, and then provide the opportunities to then put these strategies and ideals into action in our school and community.”

As the club restarts, a group of female students that hold leadership positions at IHS visited the Indiana Country Club on Oct. 16 for a leadership luncheon hosted by Indiana Counties Athena organization, along with other girls from Marion Center and United school districts. The students had the opportunity to listen to women leaders from around the county and network with other females in neighboring schools.

In the past, Athena Club has assisted with SGA’s annual blood drive and Ambassadors’ move-up day – an event that welcomes the incoming freshman to IHS. Under their new advisor, the club has plans to involve themselves in other events around the community. These efforts are meant to not only expose members to community service, but to also develop their leadership skills.  New member and junior Anna Carnovale commented, “[Athena Club] is a good opportunity to better myself and the school. I hope this helps me grow my leadership skills and help my community.”

Many students have both of their club spots filled up, however, Athena Club meets once a month during tenth period on Wednesdays. Athena Club is a great way for females to get involved with community service and make an impact in their community. For students interested in joining, reach out to Mrs. Magolis, or stop and see her in room 124.
