Student teacher Mr. Rehn makes lasting impact in High Arrow class

By ELLA BARLEY

In preparation for his future of teaching, Mr. Asher Rehn has been student-teaching at Indiana High School. He is currently student-teaching for Mr. Nath, who teaches several subjects including Public Speaking, Creative Writing, Science Fiction, and Newspaper Journalism.

Mr. Rehn is planning on being an English teacher since he has the natural skill and experience to effectively train people to be better writers.

“When I first got hired at the IUP writing center, I worked with a student for a couple of weeks and every week she had fewer of the same issues in her papers. It made me happy to be able to help people to write better, and that’s what made me want to be a teacher,” commented Rehn.

Rehn is currently in his fifth year of college at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, or IUP. Like the majority of college students, he ended up changing his major which was originally English Writing Studies. Back then, his plan was to become a published author.

Though he still wants to write, he has discovered that he is much more interested in being a teacher. Getting the opportunity to student-teach has been an enlightening experience for him. Rehn states, “I really like getting to come into school and work with kids. Since I have been studying how to teach for years it’s nice to actually be able to do it.”

In his free time, Rehn enjoys participating in service clubs at IUP. Outside of school, he tutors other students at his college to help them with writing assignments, with writing being a strength of his. “I work as a tutor at IUP where I basically peer review essays for other people,” he informs.

Being in the student-teacher position has given Rehn an idea of what being an educator is really like. Student teaching provides experience and helps people to gain the skills necessary to be effective educators in the future. In Rehn’s upcoming years, it is no doubt he will be a successful and constructive teacher.
