Cobra Kai strikes first with impressive Season 5

By WILL BERZONSKY

As it does every season, Cobra Kai took on more epic stunts, grew its cast, and expanded the Karate Kid universe in the anticipated follow-up to the shocking ending that was Cobra Kai Season 4.

The show does an amazing job building off of the limited source material the Karate Kid franchise has to offer.

Although the first Karate Kid movie was a hit when it was first released, the follow-ups to the classic were not received as well, especially the third installment of the franchise. The most common criticism about the third film was that it resembled the original Karate Kid too much and it needed to be its own film. The best thing that came out of those movies was the karate super-villain Terry Silver played by actor Thomas Ian Griffith

While the Karate Kid sequels were lackluster, to say the least, they did create what is now thought to be an iconic villain, Terry Silver.

Silver was the main antagonist in the poorly received Karate Kid Part III. His character was by no means popular in the 80’s after the release of the third Karate Kid but it’s a completely different story when it comes to Cobra Kai. Silver was one of the most popular characters in the latest season and his villainous antics were one of the most popular aspects of the show.

Silver wasn’t the only character that stole the show this season. Another former franchise villain turned hero, Chozen , seemed to be one of the most well-received characters in the show. The writers did an amazing job bringing more depth to this formally one-dimensional character. He also acted as a source of comedic relief for the season.

When asked about the show, senior Jon Berzonsky stated “I’ve only seen the first few episodes, but it was on a whole new level this season.”

Aaron Roadarmel, a senior, was also asked about his opinion on the show and stated, “There’s a lot of messing up and re-shooting involved in fight scenes. It’s a complex process. Cobra Kai has a very talented cast and crew. The stuff they do is amazing.”

All episodes of Cobra Kai season 5 are now available to stream on Netflix. The showrunners haven’t confirmed or denied a Season 6, but after the success of Season 5, it seems likely that Karate Kid fans will be getting more of their favorite characters in the near future.
