Game, set, match!: IHS girl’s tennis team continues to succeed

By LIZZIE OLSEN

With plenty of new people, along with plenty of new experiences, the IHS girl’s tennis team has had an amazing season so far. The team provides a safe and fun environment for their players, while also preparing them for success. If you are interested in playing tennis, or simply being in a sport that will guarantee a fun experience, then the IHS Girls Tennis team is for you!

These girls are undefeated at 4-0 with only three more home matches left! The top seven players just had an amazing win against Jeanette, with a score of 5-0. The top singles players are juniors Anna Buterbaugh, Tess Kuzneski, and Katarina Medvetz. Eve Kuzneski, Kate Lehman, Gracie Cook, and Johanna Welch are the top doubles players.

The team also has two managers, senior Kyle Zheng and sophomore Gabe Nettleton. The two are very involved with the team while still balancing other sports and responsibilities. Zheng commented on his time as manager, “It’s been really good so far. It’s nice to see how much growth the team has had. What’s really cool is how each individual player has improved in their own way.”

The team’s lone senior, Maura Knepper has also been immensely helpful to the team. She is always providing good advice, leading the workouts, and creating positive experiences for new members. There are a few things, in particular, she will miss about being on the IHS girl’s tennis team, “What I’ll miss the most about playing on the IHS tennis team would be my fellow teammates along with the positive space and unity the team provides.”

This all wouldn’t have been possible without their two new coaches, Mr. Matthew Neil and Mr. Scott Mosgrove. This year is Mr. Neil’s first time coaching girl’s tennis, and last spring was his first year coaching boy’s tennis. The team has been more involved than ever, participating in team bonding activities such as court clean-up day at the beginning of the season.

Sophomore Lily Speights just started tennis this year and has been loving it so far,  “My first year of tennis at IHS has been great, Mr. Neil is a very good coach. I feel like I have improved a lot and my experience here has been very welcoming.”

It’s safe to say that the team has also made an impact on the coaches’ experience too. Mr. Neil’s journey coaching tennis has gone exceptionally well. Neil expressed, “It’s been an incredible experience. We’ve got a great team, the girls have been working really hard. I am very proud of them.” Mr. Neil and Mr. Mosgrove both have really connected with the team and always make sure the girls are having a good time.

The IHS girl’s tennis team has truly excelled in more ways than one. The environment has made a huge difference, with an endless flow of support. This year’s season marks new beginnings and the making of a terrific tennis team.
