By SYDNEY BRICE – Last year, the spring sport athletes were stripped of a season, so emotions are running high as the seasons come near. The athletes have started training but question if they will be in a similar situation like the past year.
Sports have been able to run all year long with small breaks in between. Athletes have started conditioning and are working hard to make sure that they can make this season one that lasts.
Last year, spring sports were canceled and stripped seniors of their last year playing. Juniors and seniors are now using this season for recruiting and making sure that they can make as many memories as possible.
Sophomores weren’t able to connect with their teams last year as freshmen and are now coming into the season starting fresh. Sophomore Emmy Davis stated, “We had a couple of practices so I was starting to get to know some people there, and luckily I have cross-country with some of those people. It’s hard now because coaches expect us to know what we’re doing because we aren’t freshmen anymore but when we didn’t really get a chance to do it last year, we don’t always know what to do.”
Senior Sara Kane said, “One of the things I think has troubled our team has just been knowing if we’re even going to have a season or not. There’s still a possibility that we’re doing all this training just for the season to be canceled again, and that’s a scary idea to us.”
Players are still worrying about what could happen and are hoping for a season that is longer than the last. Some teams never got a chance to play even one game.
Junior, Donato Gentile asserted, “Our hopes are running high for the season; we have a lot of seniors and juniors this year, so we are looking to make a great season out of it.”
Conditioning has been a challenge with the mask requirement, but they have stayed determined throughout. Masks stay on the entire practice and social distancing takes place to follow CDC and school guidelines.
